“My Child Can Do It at School—but Not at Home. Why?”

“My child pours their own water at school; at home, they ask me to do it. They put shoes away at school; at home, they throw them anywhere.” Why is a child so different at school? At school, a child has accessible materials, predictable routines, clear expectations, peers modelling independence, and enough time. At home, everyone may be rushing, belongings may be high up, and adults automatically take over. Capability needs opportunity.

Home is also where children let go. They may hold themselves together during a busy day and become more dependent with the adults they trust most. Instead of “Why can't you do this? You do it at school”, try: “I know you can do this. Would you like to try, or would you like me to help you begin?”
