Food & Self-Feeding

Mealtimes don't have to become a daily negotiation.

Mealtimes in most homes sound like: “Just one more bite”, “Open your mouth”, “Finish what's on your plate”, “Eat the vegetables and then you can have dessert”. Many families find themselves saying these things without even realising how much of the meal has become an adult-managed event.

Montessori approaches food differently by encouraging children to participate in the process of eating and caring for themselves that might begin very simply.

Montessori mealtime steps:
  • A small glass they can hold.
  • A spoon they can manage.
  • A napkin they can use.
  • A place at the table they can recognise.
  • Eventually helping wash fruit, peel a banana, spread bread, pour water or serve an appropriate portion.

Let the meal be a shared responsibility: The adult decides what food is offered and when it is offered. The child can gradually become more involved in deciding whether and how much to eat within that structure.

Instead of turning every meal into a measure of success, create a predictable rhythm: wash hands → come to the table → eat → clear the place → wash/clean up. The routine itself teaches. And yes, there will be spills. A small cloth nearby can solve much more than a frustrated adult can.

Our work draws from Montessori principles, careful observation and established research in early childhood development. We aim to ask meaningful questions without losing sight of the child behind the data.
